Is anyone in charge of the coffee shop down here?

I - heh - I may have borrowed your blender.

I'm making smoothies though. And well, there's enough to share, if anyone else wants one.

[Kairi's still frowning at the blender. Orange and dairy doesn't seem right. But neither does anything else she's got on hand, so she'll go with it.]

Well... Okay.

[And a scoop of ice cream and some milk go into the blender. Kairi puts the lid on and starts it. She's not going to try shouting over it, but it's done pretty soon and she pours a glass for Xanth.]

I hope it's okay...

I-I bet it's good!

H-Hey, it is! Y-You, uh, you-- you should t-try it.

Heh, thanks. But I had a lot of the mango already.

And I thought people could bring their own bedding. There are mats in the gym but - heh - I don't think we could move them.

Unless you want to try making hammocks!

O-Oh, uh, w-we could-- we could do that. I-I, uh, I've-- I've never m-made a hammock though, I'm-- I'm not e-even sure how you would

[Kairi giggles.]

Just kidding! Making a hammock would be fun. But falling out of it wouldn't be.

If people bring their own blankets, then there'll be enough. I don't know where we'd find spares. We could ask the Stewardess but... Heh, she's a little strange.

[Yes, Kairi is a little unnerved by the Stewardess. She was polite. She was efficient. She was decidedly crew-like.]

Th... there's always deck twelve, i-if ours a-- aren't-- a-aren't enough.

Wh-- who is the, uh, th-the Stewardess?

That's true.

[Kairi absently picks up the seedless strawberry-like berries and begins examining them. She's never seen them before.]

I don't know her name. 'Stewardess' sounds nicer than 'maid.' She came to clean up my room after the Captain's necklace turned into jello... She wasn't very friendly.

[Her mind made up, Kairi pulls one of the berries from its stalk and eats it.

It's different. But a moment later, she smiles and decides she likes it. She offers the bunch to Xanth.]

Do you want one?

O-Oh-- sure.

...j-jello necklaces?

Heh, yeah. The Captain gave us singing pasta necklaces. Don't you remember?

[Kairi pulls another berry from the bunch while Xanth's still holding it. She'll have to find out what they are, later.]

They turned into jello after he punished someone. I don't know why. I - heh - I was wearing mine when it happened.

I-I don't think I wa-was there--

Oh. Heh, sorry. I guess--

[He's laughing. Kairi grins sheepishly but she's soon smiling. He's really laughing. She doesn't care if he's laughing at her or not. Her mind's made up; she's going to try and make Xanth laugh more often.]

Don't be sorry. It is pretty funny. I wish he did that kind of thing more often.

That-- y-yeah, that's... that's j-just silly.

...Wh-- what's j-jello, a-anyway?

It's... Heh, it's a dessert, or a snack I suppose. It's like fruit preserves, only with a lot less fruit and a lot more sugar. It sets too.

We can go to the Bazaar and find some if you like. But, heh, you might not like it. It's really sweet.

[Kairi has got the message: Xanth does not like unnaturally sweet things.]

N...no, I-I might not like i-it th--then. B-But I-- I like this, a-and it's p-pretty sweet!

Heh, well I'm glad.

[Kairi's still smiling. It's almost like old times, before everything started, with--

Kairi looks away and starts cleaning up fruit peelings before she can finish that thought. But as she turns to throw the peels in the trashcan, she frowns at it.

She's not replacing friends. She's making new ones. Why shouldn't she make them laugh and smile in a way she knows how?

The momentary guilt does remind her or something though.]

So... Suppose we camp out in about a week, heh, will you invite Jinx?

Um... m-maybe? If he's not busy o-or, his, uh, he's... k-kind of hurt, so, if he's better, th-- then I might? I-If you wouldn't m-mind.

Oh! I don't mind!

[Hey, he was very normal when he came down here for a smoothie. And all friends are welcome.]

He was, heh, here earlier. He wouldn't tell me what happened. We just, heh, had a strange conversation a while ago.

[Her ears are burning. Don't-blush-don't-blush-don't-blush-don't-blush! She fiddles with her hair and tries to cover it with a laugh.]

He must be a good friend.

Y-- yeah, I, I guess-- b-but, uhm, he didn't... s-say anything weird... did he?

Well... Yeah, heh, sort of. It was weird.

[Bringing this up was definitely not a good idea. She can't ask Xanth about what Jinx said without answering Jinx's question all over again. It wasn't fair.]

But that's okay! I mean, heh, he's not like that all the time. So invite him! It'll be great!

[Of that, Kairi is determined.]

R-- right! Okay.

D-Do, uh, do we n--need anything e-else?

Hmm... Well...

I don't think drinking near a fire is a good idea, but someone else might like to. But I guess they can bring their own.

We can get water and soda from the Bazaar... Hmm... Nope! There's nothing else I can think of.

W-Well, I... I guess that's it th-then! I'll, uhm, whenever y-you want to do this, I... I'll help you g--get food and stuff. C-Can't let you carry it all yourse--yourself.
