1. Character's Name: Kairi
2. Fandom: Kingdom Hearts
3. Time Frame: Kingdom Hearts II, after the secret ending.
4. Age: 14
5. Background: Kairi comes from a universe where every person and every world throughout the cosmos has a heart ruled by the forces of light and darkness. She was born on a world known as Radiant Garden. She lived there until she was about five years old, and was raised predominantly by her grandmother on a diet of fables and fairytales. Kairi has no memory of her true parents.
At age four, she was attacked by some alien creatures of darkness, called unversed, and defended by an anthropomorphic mouse named Mickey and a woman named Aqua. She was the wielder of a giant, sharp key, called a keyblade, which was used to fight creatures of darkness. Before departing, she unknowingly passed the ability to wield this weapon to Kairi.
About a year later, Radiant Garden was plunged into darkness by a man styling himself ‘Ansem’ and impersonating the world’s ruler. Rather than dying or being lost to darkness, Kairi was cast adrift. She ended up arriving by meteor shower on a small oceanic world called Destiny Islands, with no memory of her previous life. She was taken in by the mayor and quickly befriended two local boys, Sora and Riku. The three grew up together, happy and carefree on their island home. When they were thirteen years old, decided to build a raft to sail away from the islands, hoping to reach other worlds. This was not the best plan ever, but luckily they would never complete it.
By the time that the raft was nearly finished, Kairi had begun to sense a change in Riku and had reservations about the whole ordeal. The night before they were due to depart, a massive storm struck the islands. For some reason, Kairi immediately set out for a small cave called ‘the secret place’ that housed a small, mysterious door. At the time, Kairi did not know that this door led to the heart of Destiny Islands, a heart that was under threat by encroaching darkness. Sora found her there, looking faint, and then a black wind engulfed the pair, and Kairi disappeared.
Overwhelmed, Kairi had entrusted her heart to Sora for safe-keeping. Destiny Islands was swallowed by darkness and Sora, Riku and Kairi’s comatose body were scattered across the cosmos. Kairi’s heart remained nestled within Sora’s and shared in some of his memories and experiences as he learned to use a keyblade of his own. He set out on a quest to find her and Riku, and defeat the darkness. Riku also searched for Kairi, but did so with the aid of Maleficent, a fairy witch who embraced the darkness. Riku and Sora eventually came to blows, but it was Riku who found Kairi’s body first. He searched for a way to revive her. He discovered that she was one of only seven ‘princesses’ with hearts of purest light, and was deceived into believing that he must catch ‘em all to unlock a door to the heart of all worlds – Kingdom Hearts – in order to revive Kairi.
Ultimately, Kairi was only revived once Sora ran himself through with a keyblade forged out of the other six princesses’ hearts. This released Kairi’s heart but turned Sora into a heartless, a creature of darkness. Riku, who had been possessed by the spirit-form of ‘Ansem,’ bought Kairi enough time to escape. She later recognized the heartless that Sora had become, and called him back from darkness. She fled with Sora to a refugee world, and stayed there while Sora went in search of Riku. However, in the end she was summoned into a dark abyss where she found Sora before the door to Kingdom Hearts. They barely had time to speak before Destiny Islands was restored. But Kairi was the only one who was returned home.
Shortly after, she and the other residents of the islands suffered select amnesia, forgetting all about Sora. While Kairi couldn’t remember him, she was the only one to remember that there was someone she had forgotten. This tormented her for about a year as she waited around on the islands. She only began to remember Sora when she forged a mental connection with his nobody, called Roxas. A nobody is a being created when the heart leaves the body. Sora’s and Kairi’s nobodies were born when Sora stabbed himself with a keyblade. This connection with Roxas reconnected Kairi’s heart with Sora’s. Soon after, she regained all her memories of him and began to wonder if waiting around on the islands was really the best idea. When another nobody, Axel, showed up on the islands and was vaguely menacing toward her, Kairi took the first opportunity to flee into a portal of darkness that would transport her between worlds.
She found her way to another world but had only just begun to make some friends before Axel caught up with her. She almost gave him the slip in another dark portal, but Saix – yet another nobody – caught her. She was left in the castle dungeon on the nobodies’ world, but her own nobody – Namine – released her. The two of them met up with Riku, and Namine then faded, becoming a part of Kairi once more. Riku and Kairi quickly found Sora within the castle, and hurried to join him in defeating the nobodies’ leader – ‘Ansem’s nobody, Xemnas – and other dark forces. Riku summoned a keyblade for Kairi to use. Together the three, along with other allies, appeared to drive Xemnas off. But of the three, only Kairi had escaped via dark portal before Xemnas reappeared and trapped Sora and Riku. Kairi waited on Destiny Islands, but this time she was not left waiting long.
A short time after their reunion, Mickey mouse sent Riku and Sora a letter summoning them for an examination of keyblade mastery. Before they had decided whether or not to go, Kairi would find herself in Holloway’s Keep.
6. Personality: Kairi follows her heart. She has a quiet self-confidence and is sociable and friendly most of the time. She has faith in herself and her friends and the general power of good to triumph over evil. While this can make her naïve, sometimes almost to the point of wilful ignorance or denial, it also lends her strength in the face of adversity, and keeps her optimistic. She tends to trust her intuition, which means she’s pretty impulsive in a crisis. She acts on her emotions rather than stopping to think things through, even if the decisions that she makes make no sense at the time.
Unlike your standard Disney princess, Kairi doesn’t crave more. She doesn’t need far off places, daring sword fights, magic spells or a prince in disguise. She’s happy living a calm life on the islands. She doesn’t need glory in battle, whether real or pretend, and she doesn’t get restless for change. That said, she’s not entirely passive and if adventure or conflict find her, then she’s more than willing to step up and take action, to try and hold her own. If her friends are heading into dangerous situations, she does not like being left behind and will leap into action in order to help. Still, she likes knowing that a journey has an ending. She’s playful, not above a little good-natured teasing, and will sometimes provoke friendly competition even if she has no intention of seriously participating. It’s all in good fun, to her.
7. Previous Game Developments: None
8. Appearance: Kairi’s about average height for a fourteen year old girl. She’s pale with dark red, shoulder-length hair. She’s a little skinny but she’s started to fill out over the last year. She usually only wears light makeup and is generally well-kept. Her most striking feature would be her vivid blue eyes.
9. Abilities: Kairi has an intuitive perception of the powers of light and darkness. This often doesn’t register consciously, but still effects her reactions to people and situations. She has the power to hold back darkness for a time, a power she’s never learned to harness, and therefore can’t actively use. She has the power to pull those to whom she is particularly close back from being consumed by darkness. She herself cannot be corrupted by darkness, only imprisoned by it. All of these abilities are underdeveloped, incidental and not entirely understood by Kairi. They also depend on the specific natures of light and darkness as defined within her own universe. So during her stay at the Keep, they’ll almost exclusively apply to hypothetical cast-mates and otherwise be entirely ineffective and irrelevant.
Kairi also has the ability to wield a keyblade. This means that she has the power to summon and dismiss the weapon. However, while she’s athletic and agile by nature, she has little to no experience wielding a sword.
She’s also pretty good at making little trinkets or ornaments.
10. Languages: English
11. Items: Her clothes: A pink mini-dress, a white tank-top, white sneakers, a stone pendant and black belt with attached pocket. She also has a star-shaped shell charm.
12. Weapons: Her keyblade, called Destiny’s Embrace. It looks like a giant key, but instead of teeth, it has a small bunch of flowers. While sharp and effective at beating back heartless or nobodies on most worlds, within the Keep it will be about as useful as swinging an ornate piece of garden railing. It might cause some bruises, even some small cuts or lacerations if Kairi manages to hit hard enough, and it would be more effective against smaller, non-sentient opponents. But it is really not all that powerful.
13. Writing sample - Third Person Prose:
Kairi watched the dark clouds where they massed on the horizon, blotting out the stars. It couldn’t storm, not tonight! Tomorrow they were going to set sail. Her thoughts drifted to the rucksack tucked far under her desk, packed and re-packed with last-minute essentials. Even as she thought of it, and began to dream of sunlit days at sea with her two best friends, her gaze drifted to the patch of warm light that fell on the dirt pathway, cast from the kitchen window behind her. The scent of lemon and spiced fish filled her nose, the smell of welcome and home.
A distant growled crawled across the sky and Kairi’s gaze snapped back to the dark circle of clouds.
Something wasn’t right.
She didn’t think. Her feet simply carried her away, down the path, past the square of warm light, away from the smell of spice and fish. Her gaze remained fixed on those clouds, tinged an angry purple, as she walked down the slope towards the pier.
When she reached her boat, she had to look away. Her hands were shaking as she untied the rope. She shivered, though the night was humid. As she drew away from the main island, she was intensely aware of the splash of her oars. Sound carried so far over the water. There was no sound tonight, no birds, no laughter or music from an island party, no voices from the receding beach. There was only her oars, the grumble of the waves, and another growl from that bruise of clouds.
Her boat bumped against the pier of the play-island. Her knot was sloppy. She fumbled the rope. She didn’t care. Her feet carried her up the pier and onto the path. The sand crunched beneath her shoes. But already she looked to that twisted passageway, held up by gnarled tree-roots, which yawned between the waterfall and the hillside.
Kairi stooped and entered.
14. Writing sample - First Person Prose:
You know, I’m glad things turned out this way. Part of me still wishes that none of it had ever happened. But it did happen, and it looks like everyone’s okay. We’re happy now, all of us.
I was always happy here. I probably would never have left if it wasn’t for Sora and Riku. But I’m glad I saw other worlds again, and I’m glad I remembered. Riku’s happy now too, even if you can’t tell, most of the time. It was hardest for him. It still is hard for him, sometimes. But he’s happy just being home now, even if home never changes. And Sora… Sora’s always happy.
We’ve all changed so much but, in a way, none of us have changed at all. And even though I know things are going to keep on changing, I think I’m ready. No matter how far apart we are, I know I’ll always be able to find my way back to them.
