[She had meant to address this to someone, to ask for help, to do something more than complain.

But after a few seconds' silence, she doesn't know what to do besides just saying it.]

There are snakes on my head!

[Somebody woke up a gorgon this morning.]

And they bite.

...might be a good idea not to um. Look anyone in the eyes, Kairi. Just in case.

[This... This doesn't sound like Tammy.]

Why?

[Xanth's handwriting is awful; it's shaky, wonky, and altogether nearly illegible. It's usually bad, but today it's even worse - probably because Xanth woke up with only three fingers to go with his new insectoid body.]

I've heard some stories about women with snakes for hair who can turn a man to stone just by meeting their eyes. Only guys, though. But that's just my world. Things're probably different here.

Calm down, kid. It will not last.

I've been bitten a few times, but they missed my eyes.

[Should she ask why he's writing instead of talking?]

[She didn't want to turn people to stone.]

Okay. Thanks. I'll be careful.

Um, what happened to your voice?

[It is Ironhide! He sounds different.]

Do you know anything about snakes?

[He's an adult. He should know, right? Even if it doesn't last, they're biting now.]

Yeah.

[Yeah, it's him, Kairi. Just squishier.]

Not really. No. Just leave them alone until they get bored. That should work.

Can't you talk?

But... They're on my head.

[How can she leave them alone? What makes snakes sleep?]

I think they're hungry.

[Could she ask him to show her? She was curious. She wanted to see.

If he showed her, then she'd show him too. Just as long as she didn't look him in the eye.]

Okay.

[Xanth's next reply is a little delayed, because he's... kind of horrible to look at. He doesn't want Kairi to see him, but she wants to know. He just needs to work up the courage.

Soon, he does.

The video switches on to a shot of his new face. His eyes are big, red, and strangely expressive; his mouth has been replaced by tendrils that shift whenever he moves it; his nose and ears are gone; and his skin is covered in chitinous plates.

This is how I sound when I talk, he tries to say, tendrils wiggling as he does, but he only clicks and garbles.

Then, after a moment's pause, he cuts the feed.]

[She recoils, and is instantly grateful that Xanth can't see her. Kairi tries to smooth her face out before she strokes the page, activating her own video feed.

She nods, careful not to look directly at the book but instead glance at it through her lashes. Her head is crowned with at least twenty Red snakes, their tails tapering into her scalp, each no wider than a small braid.

She waves, her hand flying too close to her hair. One of the snakes rears back and strikes.]

Ow!

[At once she's ignoring the journal and instead sucking the injured finger. There's several similar wounds on her hand and shoulders, and one on her eyebrow is still weeping blood.

The feed cuts out abruptly.]

[Kairi's new form is not nearly as monstrous as Xanth's, but he sees the attack and he notes the blood. While he may be frightening, she could actually be in danger.

He switches back to writing. No need to scare her.]

Then shake them out and feed them.

[Cause that voice is spooky, and her fingers seem to be stronger than they look.]

It's kind of finding it's way out of a different kind of pathway right now. Meaning I don't seem to have a mouth so much as a hole and in place of a voice box I have a candle.

Fun, right?

[Does he think... They're in her hair?

She switches to video.]

They're attached.

[When he puts it like that, it sounds like they're coming out here ears. That's even worse.]

They're attached to my head. They don't have tails.

Do you know how to feed snakes?

[Good job not scaring her, Xanth. That didn't work at all.]

I don't think so.

[But she's never been bitten by a snake before. How do you tell?]

They hurt, but I feel fine.

[Except that her hair's alive.]

They aren't swelling.

[Or turning green or anything.]

A... Candle?

[Did she swallow it?]

Is it burning you?

If it is, I can't feel it. I just feel kind of hollow and weird.

[But moving on because she doesn't want to freak Kairi out.]

You going to go to the party thing?
