[She had meant to address this to someone, to ask for help, to do something more than complain.

But after a few seconds' silence, she doesn't know what to do besides just saying it.]

There are snakes on my head!

[Somebody woke up a gorgon this morning.]

And they bite.

[Xanth's handwriting is awful; it's shaky, wonky, and altogether nearly illegible. It's usually bad, but today it's even worse - probably because Xanth woke up with only three fingers to go with his new insectoid body.]

[Should she ask why he's writing instead of talking?]

[Could she ask him to show her? She was curious. She wanted to see.

If he showed her, then she'd show him too. Just as long as she didn't look him in the eye.]

Okay.

[Xanth's next reply is a little delayed, because he's... kind of horrible to look at. He doesn't want Kairi to see him, but she wants to know. He just needs to work up the courage.

Soon, he does.

The video switches on to a shot of his new face. His eyes are big, red, and strangely expressive; his mouth has been replaced by tendrils that shift whenever he moves it; his nose and ears are gone; and his skin is covered in chitinous plates.

This is how I sound when I talk, he tries to say, tendrils wiggling as he does, but he only clicks and garbles.

Then, after a moment's pause, he cuts the feed.]

[She recoils, and is instantly grateful that Xanth can't see her. Kairi tries to smooth her face out before she strokes the page, activating her own video feed.

She nods, careful not to look directly at the book but instead glance at it through her lashes. Her head is crowned with at least twenty Red snakes, their tails tapering into her scalp, each no wider than a small braid.

She waves, her hand flying too close to her hair. One of the snakes rears back and strikes.]

Ow!

[At once she's ignoring the journal and instead sucking the injured finger. There's several similar wounds on her hand and shoulders, and one on her eyebrow is still weeping blood.

The feed cuts out abruptly.]

[Kairi's new form is not nearly as monstrous as Xanth's, but he sees the attack and he notes the blood. While he may be frightening, she could actually be in danger.

He switches back to writing. No need to scare her.]

[Good job not scaring her, Xanth. That didn't work at all.]

I don't think so.

[But she's never been bitten by a snake before. How do you tell?]

They hurt, but I feel fine.

[Except that her hair's alive.]

They aren't swelling.

[Or turning green or anything.]

[Hey, he tried. It's not his fault he's a terror.]

[He hopes. Xanth would go to check on her, to take care of her, but he's sure his presence would be unwelcome.]

[She didn't want to. She was fine. And she wanted to less the moment Xanth suggested it. But she knew that was just stubbornness. He was making sense.]

Mm. Okay.

[It was easy enough to agree.]

[No one likes seeing doctors; he knows that.

But he couldn't let Kairi get hurt.]

[Did he think she'd lie to him?]

[No, but he just can't risk it. She's died on him three times and like hell he'll let her die another.]
